Carjacking on the increase yet again

According to the official crime stats released last week, carjacking increased by 92.2% for the period April 2021 to 30 June 2021 compared to the same period last year. This figure, however, was adjusted to 13.2% when compared to the same period during 2019/2020.

  • A car is replaceable a life is not. Do not argue, fight or try anything dangerous to escape the situation. News stories about drivers whose ‘heroic’ actions helped them escape would be far lower if the stories of people who tried fighting, but failed, were published.
  • Indicate your willingness to comply. A hijack extraction course will teach you the steps to take that will indicate to a criminal that you will surrender the car.
  • Before it is a real-life situation, teach your children how to react if they are ever in a carjacking. This includes learning what is the best way to get your children out of the car and sharing this with them in a manner that they will remember.
  • Ensure you regularly practice getting out of a vehicle in the same way you would during a carjacking – as often as possible. Make it the normal way you exit your car so that if it had to happen, it is muscle memory and you react automatically.

As the economy continues to struggle to recover, it is unlikely the next crime stats will improve by much. Ensure no matter what the stats say, that you are constantly aware and know what to do if you come face-to-face with a carjacker.

Car Tip of the Week: Using Your Indicators

Believe it or not but your indicators are an integral part of your car.  Furthermore, they are not an optional extra and actually elements which have been factored into the total price of the car.  Knowing that you pay for your indicators as part of your monthly instalment, it makes sense that you put them to good use.

Not only does using the indicators allow other road users to know what is going on but it also allows drivers around you to prepare for whatever you are about to do. The correct and timeous use of your indicators makes you a more considerate and safe driver.

The best thing about your indicators is that they don’t wear our overnight so use them as often as possible!

Kia goes electric at first IAA Mobility

The global premiere of Kia’s all-new plug-in hybrid Sportage is the first European-specific Sportage version in the model’s 28-year history.

Kia will go electric at the first IAA Mobility show, held between 7 and 12 September in Munich. The Korean carmaker will give a global premiere to the Sportage plug-in hybrid (PHEV), based on the first European-specific version of the Sportage in the model’s 28-year history.

Kia will also showcase the talents of the company’s first dedicated battery electric vehicle (BEV), the EV6.

The Sportage PHEV will attract people looking to make the move to electric while enjoying the practicality and presence of the new urban SUV.

The PHEV model features Kia’s 1.6-litre T-GDI engine, a 66.9 kW permanent magnet traction electric motor and a 13.8 kWh lithiumion polymer battery pack.

Kia will also give a European public debut to the EV6, the embodiment of the new Kia brand.

The high-tech BEV has been developed to remove the perceived barriers that prevent many from making the switch to electric by providing rapid charging times, access to an extensive charging network, impressively long range, and segment-leading interior space.

The EV6 will deliver the very best experience a BEV can offer, making ownership as convenient and accessible as running a petrol or diesel vehicle, and with reduced environmental impact.

Visitors will be treated to an EV6 VR experience and the opportunity to sit in both the all-new Sportage PHEV and the new EV6.
