WHY IT IS IMPORTANT TO GET YOUR EYES TESTED

Getting an eye test is vitally important for the health and safety of all motorists.  Done timeously, eye tests help identify eye problems or prevent the further deterioration of any existing problems.

There are two types of eye tests  – a vision screening and an eye exam.

AN EYE SCREENING:

  1. Is a short test compared to a full eye exam.
  2. It can be conducted by a nurse, optician or general medical practitioner and not necessarily an optometrist.
  3. indicates if you have a problem with your vision but not necessarily what the problem is.
  4. is conducted using a simple series of assessments such as testing;
    • your eyes for sensitivity / reaction to light
    • eye muscle coordination
    • for colour blindness
    • your vision using the “Big E” or “Snellen” chart

An eye screening does NOT

  1. replace a thorough eye exam
  2. test for eye diseases
  3. identify causes of any problems with yourvision

It does however,

  1. Identifythe existence of problems with your vision
  2. Indicate if there is a need for you to get a comprehensive eye exam

It is important to divulge any and all problems related to your eye health during the screening.  Information such as family history, injuries and vision impairments go a long way towards assisting the professional during the screening.

An EYE EXAMINATION is a thorough assessment which involves examining all aspects of your vision and eye health. It takes much longer and is more comprehensive than an eye screening.

Eye examinations vary, however, commonly cover the following:

  1. Cover test: to assess if your eyes work well together
  2. Eye movement / ocular motility: to verify how well your eyes track a moving object
  3. Vision acuity: evaluates how sharp your vision is
  4. Glaucoma: tests the pressure in your eyes
  5. Colour blindness: checks your colour vision
  6. Slit Lamp exam: determines the structure of your eye under high magnification

The results of an eye exam results in an individualized treatment plan.  This may include prescription glasses, eye drops, eye exercises or surgery in the case of serious problems.

Having your eye tests regularly could keep you, your family and other motorists safe on the road.  In keeping with COVID-19 regulations it is important to book an appointment with your optometrist before-hand to ensure you can be safely attended to.

Women determined to be the change the Automotive Industry needs: Part 1 – Chantel Steyn

Five women in the automotive industry, all accredited members of the Motor Industry Workshop Association (MIWA), a proud Association of the Retail Motor Industry Organisation (RMI), talk to us about what they love and don’t love about the industry, and how they see the industry evolving.

CHANTEL STEYN had to leave her job in the government sector to join her husband at his Car Service City branch in Pretoria in 2018, after the business expanded rapidly within two months of opening. She bought her own Car Service City branch, also in Pretoria, a year later.

I’ve often been told ‘what do you know about vehicles?

– Chantel Steyn

The branch was awarded Best New Branch and Best Branch Overall in the franchise in 2019.

She was fortunate to experience full support from male colleagues and suppliers, but there is no doubt women are not seen as equals in the industry.

“I’ve often been told ‘what do you know about vehicles?’ when people find out what I do for a living. I tell them you don’t have to know everything about vehicles to manage a business well. Men tend not to take your opinions seriously until they get to know you and can see what you are contributing to the business.

“There is no glitz and glam, so you need to be a strong character. You have to remember customers are your bread and butter, so you must be competitive; always one step ahead of the rest when it comes to customer service and quality workmanship.”

Determined to set an example for women by being the best in her field, Chantel also wants to empower women to excel in the industry. She adds that she will always champion excellent customer service and quality workmanship.

“You are the creator of your own destiny, so never give up on your dreams,” she says.
